AVN.- Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro celebrated on Monday the first decade of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR), an organization created on April 17, 2007 to foster regional integration and south-south cooperation.
«Ten years ago, on the island of Margarita, our commander Hugo Chavez, with the presence of 12 South American heads of states, founded here the Union of South American Nations,» he recalled in an address broadcast on radio and television during the seventh anniversary of the Bolivarian Militia.
This block of regional action, whose antecedent was the South American Community of Nations, created in Cuzco, was resized under the action of Commander Hugo Chavez, who proposed to name this organization Union of South American Nations, comprising Venezuela, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname and Uruguay.
«Our greetings to the peoples of UNASUR. That is our way, the South,» he said.
UNASUR has 12 sectoral councils to deal with issues affecting the region within the body: Energy, Defense, Health, Social Development, Infrastructure and Planning, World Drug Problem, Economy and Finance, Electoral System, Education, Culture, Science, Technology and Innovation and the Council on Citizen Security, Justice and Coordination of Actions against Transnational Organized Crime.
